TechReflect 10/22

Imagine you were asleep for a thousand years and suddenly woke up in this technological age. What are some things that can help you get up-to-date with using technology?

If i was asleep for a thousand years and suddenly woke up in this technological age, some things that can help me to get up-to-date with using technology is reading the Dummied Guide to computers and then playing around/exploring the computer and what it has to offer. After figuring out the computer, you can figure out any tech thing. Cellphones, itouchs, ipods, etc.

b.) What inspired Alan Kay is that he wanted to invent the future and for the computers he wanted the children to be able to work with it. Alan Kay accomplishe many things. He invented the Dynabook which is pretty much like the Personal Computer. He also helped develop the Macintosh which is the firt computer to incorporate many of Kays far-reaching ideas. After 12 years of being a researcher at Apple, he left to Disney where he developed Squeak. In 2002 he joined Hewlett-Packards research lab while continuing work with Viewpoints Research Institute. In 2004 he was given an award.

3 podcasts

the podcasts i have been listening were similar in the way they were formated.
They started off with an energetic beat, gave announcements and then gave a breif description on what that days podcast was about. Then they would turn to the person they were interviewing (at least im assuming so) and would then start the show.

Review A

Explain how and why the Internet was created.

The internet was created by a group of scientists who wanted to share research with each other. But then they realized that this internet could be a new technology! Even though internet is government based, its not government run.

Describe the technology that’s at the heart of the Internet.

The technology thats at the heart of the Internet is the TCP/IP (transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). it is supposed to be the language of the internet, allowing cross-network communication for almost every type of network and computer. The TCP breaks messages into packets. IP is the address for the packets where each four numbers is separated by a period. There is also the DNS (domain name system) that translates the IP numbers into names. Theres emailing where you have an email address.

Describe the technology that makes the Web work as a multimedia mass medium.
HTTP and HTML are the main tech that makes the web work as multimedia mass medium.

RSS stuff

How easy/difficult is it to use RSS?

RSS is not difficult to use. In fact it is rather simple and excruciatingly easy. It is when information or updates automatically come to you. Its technical definition is an XML-based format for sharing. Some sites that carries this is for instance, Facebook. On your homepage, you automatically get people updates on their profile: a new pic thats up, a change in their status, etc. This saves a lot of time from you going onto their page and finding these things out. Another website that has this is myspace. it is the same as facebook. you get updates from peoples pages.

A Boolean Logice is a way of searching with quotations. for example you would search on google, "hygiene AND 18th century AND NOT ENGLAND)

What do email addresses and URLs have in common?

URLs and email addresses both carry the domain naming system. A web URL specifies the IP address of the Web server that houses the page. In an email, the domain name system is used to pinpoint the internet location of the host computer that contains the users email server. It includes user name and host address.

Review thursday 10/1

a) How does the type of Internet connection influence the things you can do on the internet?
It all depends on the kind of internet connection to do things on the internet because if its slow then you cant watch youtube clips or play games. Direct Connections is the best way to go because then you can take full advantage of internet service without the need to dial in. Plus, all of your files are stored on the comp and response time is much faster.

b) Choose 2 areas of impact to discuss 1-2 (in total 3) social & ethical issues related to internet connections.

Education-- Equality of Access: Students and teachers can search up educational information on the internet and will be allowed access to as much info as they want. - Control: Students and teachers have control over how much info they want and how much they dont want. - Reliability: Students and teachers feel comfortable and trust the internet connection to be able to use the internet and find information.

Health--Authenticity: A diseased human doesnt have to call up a hospital to ask about his disease but instead can go onto the hospitals website and see how they treat his kind of disease. - Integrity: However, though there are some accurate websites, some like Wikipedia, an ill human cannot always relie on it.
